Jan Groos ist Forscher, Filmemacher und Podcaster. Er ist Leiter des Medialabs am Fachbereich für Kommunikationswissenschaft der Universität Salzburg. Im Zentrum seiner Forschung stehen demokratische Zukunftsgestaltung, kritische Medienpraxis und öffentliche Wissensproduktion. Seine Arbeit zu demokratischer Planung und seine öffentliche Forschung im Rahmen des Podcasts Future Histories machen ihn zu einer auch international wahrgenommenen Stimme im Feld demokratischer Transformationen und alternativer Zukünfte.
Jan Groos hat Bildende Kunst an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien studiert und zu 'Soziotechnischen Imaginationen algorithmischer Regierungskunst' im Fach Soziologie promoviert. Er war Leiter des Forschungsschwerpunkts Demokratischer Wandel und Wissen am Alexander von Humboldt Institut für Internet und Gesellschaft (HIIG) und Research Fellow am Berliner Weizenbaum Institut und dem Remarque Institut der New York University. Er ist affiliierter Forscher am Forschungsschwerpunkt digitale_kultur der Fernuniversität Hagen, dem Alexander von Humboldt Institut für Internet und Gesellschaft (HIIG) und am Critical Data Lab der Universität Oldenburg sowie Ko-Organisator des Alternatives to Capitalism Netzwerks der Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE).
Jan ist Gründer und Forschungsleiter des Future Histories LABs. Seit 2020 betreibt er zudem Metalepsis – ein kleines Unternehmen spezialisiert auf anspruchsvolle Wissensproduktion in den Formaten Podcast, Video und mehr.

Jan Groos is Director of the Media Lab at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Salzburg. His research focuses on democratic futures, critical media practice, and public knowledge production. His work on democratic planning as well as his public research practice in the context of the Future Histories podcast have made him an internationally recognized voice in the field of democratic transformation and alternative futures.
He received his diploma degree from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and completed his PhD at the Centre of Sociological Theory at Kiel University with a dissertation on Sociotechnical Imaginaries of Algorithmic Governance. He was Head of Research for Democratic Change and Knowledge at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) and Research Fellow at the Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin and at the Remarque Institute of New York University. He is affiliated researcher at the digital_cultures research cluster at FernUniversität Hagen, the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), and the Critical Data Lab at the University of Oldenburg as well as co-organizer of the Alternatives to Capitalism network of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE).
In 2020 Jan founded Metalepsis, a small company devoted to intriguing knowledge production in the formats podcast, video and beyond. He is also founder and Head of Research of the Future Histories LAB.
